Green Mountain Foster Grandparent Program

Foster Grandparent

The Green Mountain Foster Grandparent Program serves Rutland, Bennington and Addison Counties. The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a federally funded program that has successfully placed thousands of older adults in nonprofit organizations that serve children nationwide.  FGP provides opportunities for volunteers to lend their time, skills, and life experiences to assist children in reaching their potential. Foster Grandparents provide mentoring and role modeling for children of all ages.

Foster Grandparents give anywhere from 15 to 40 hours a week and receive a stipend, monthly in-service trainings, and travel reimbursement. Foster Grandparents are not intended to be a replacement for regular staff, but rather provide an added dimension of one on one attention that contributes to achieving developmentally appropriate skills for children of all ages.

The Green Mountain Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by Rutland Community Programs, a division of Community Care Network.

See what Foster Grandparents say about the program

“Since joining the program I do not feel so isolated and inconsequential.  The program has made me feel essential and connected to the community.  Too often seniors are treated in a dismissive manner – we have a lot to give!  A lifetime of experiences has given us a treasure of knowledge to share.”

“My sense of purpose has greatly improved and increased.  Children come to me to ask for help with reading and writing and I give them personal attention.  It is great fun.”

“I haven’t had to go to the food shelf since joining FGP.  I was going to the community food shelf and BROC every month.  I have been able to buy a car and pay for insurance.  I also have enough money for the copayments for my medications.  Being a Foster Grandparent has truly been a miracle and has helped me in so many ways.”

“I feel so satisfied in my volunteer work, very much appreciated.  For me, the greatest gifts of presence and love are so needed in our world today.  Being a Foster Grandparent allows me to bring presence and love to a population that has been lacking it in their lives.”
